First of all, we have to understand the concept of pure and impure emotions. Impure emotions are those which do not arise from within but are a reaction to an external event. Osho has called the state of mind as pure emotion. Emotions arising from the state of mind give peace and comfort to the mind. They open the window for the development of the inner self. The criterion for identifying pure and impure emotions is that if any emotion comes from within us, then it will be a pure emotion. If any emotion is born from the act or event of another person, then that emotion will be impure. Excessive generation of impure emotions can create restlessness, anger and animosity within us. If a person greets us politely during a morning walk, then a feeling of happiness arises in the mind. This emotion is not pure. It is a reaction to the polite greeting of that person. On the contrary, if a person uses harsh words while meeting us, then feelings of anger arise. These feelings of anger have come into existence by listening to harsh words. Since this feeling is a reaction, it will fall in the category of impure feeling.
In the chain of purification of emotions, friendliness plays the most important role. It is considered important. The arrival of friendliness in life is not possible automatically. Friendliness has to be invited. Sadhana has to be done to make friendliness a part of life. The social life of which we are a part, the development of friendliness is not possible automatically there. Osho says that centres of friendliness are present within everyone but due to the complexity of life, these centres remain undeveloped throughout life. Friendliness and love need a fearless ground to develop. Until there are no elements of fearlessness in the earth, the tree of friendliness and love will never blossom and flourish. The first step for the practice of friendliness can be selfless service to people. The expansion of this step is not limited to human beings only but is also extended to animals, birds and the entire universe.
Followers of a particular religion are very sensitive towards insects in the dark. They are taught that eating at night can harm the lives of tiny insects. If such people naturally prohibit eating at night with the intention of not committing violence, then it is non-violence. This feeling has arisen from compassion. There is another aspect also. Where the followers of a particular religion do not eat in the dark following the habits of their ancestors, Osho has termed it a habit and has not included this act in the category of non-violence.
It is a requirement of etiquette to use polite words in order to avoid offending people in society. Such politeness can be a part of the social system. It should not be considered friendliness. Friendliness will come only through sadhana. This sadhana can be started by sending love towards nature. Osho says that there is so much bitterness within us that we may have difficulty in sending a message of love to the entire human world, therefore, sending a message of love and friendliness to rivers and mountains is easy and convenient.
In the old days, expressing awe at the sight of the sunrise was a sacred way of expressing friendliness. Considering the river as equivalent to mother and expressing reverence towards the river was a way of expanding friendliness. Addressing the moon as uncle has also been our desire to convey a message of friendliness towards the moon. This awe, this expression, this feeling of reverence, were all experiments of being loving towards nature.
